Curriculum

At Carrington Infant School we map our bespoke curriculum on Sonar Map Maker. We believe each subject should have a golden thread running from EYFS to Year 2, linking learning and therefore building understanding.

At Carrington Infant School we place a strong emphasis on a sparkling curriculum that is driven by Enrichment, Inclusion and Oracy. With our school values Kindness, Respect and Honesty underpinning everything we do and believe in. These values are taught through traditional teaching, school council, assemblies, clubs, extra-curricular activities, learning experiences and every other aspect of school life that the children experience. We believe that a well-rounded education goes beyond academics, and our curriculum is designed to provide pupils with a wealth of opportunities for personal and social development. Whether through sports, music, art, or community opportunities, we aim to help pupils become well-rounded individuals with a love of learning that will last a lifetime.

Our curriculum has been reviewed and continues to be developed and refined to be ambitious, relevant to our school and its locality and built on high-quality learning experiences.

Children travel through a carefully constructed curriculum, ensuring they access the full range of subjects and content, whilst developing through a progression of skills and knowledge.

Our intent is for our curriculum to be engaging, challenging, thought-provoking and enjoyable, with a mix of high-quality practical experiences and detailed and worthwhile knowledge development.

In Year 1, our curriculum is delivered through continuous provision, creating a learning environment that is rich, engaging, and full of opportunities. The play projects we design enable children to encounter every area of the National Curriculum each day in ways that capture their curiosity. Throughout the year, pupils build on essential skills such as problem-solving, cooperation, resilience, critical thinking, exploration, and negotiation. Our learners are enthusiastic, confident, and eager to take on new challenges.

We place great value on play-based learning that is open-ended and led by the children’s interests. Exploration enables children to strengthen their understanding and develop new skills. For instance, one child might investigate shapes by building with recycled materials, while others may choose a shape-matching game or sorting activity. This freedom supports strong self-regulation as children plan their own learning and take responsibility for their choices.

Continuous provision allows children to revisit and refine what they have been taught. As our activities run over extended periods, pupils can deepen their thinking and broaden their ideas. They naturally form links between concepts through hands-on experiences in our Woodland and Orchard rooms.

During focused sessions with the teacher, children work in small groups and receive instant verbal feedback. This helps us correct any misunderstandings straight away and offer additional challenge when appropriate.

Oracy is central to our approach. Our Year 1 provision promotes rich talk and meaningful communication throughout the day. Staff build strong relationships with each child, enabling purposeful interactions that support learning.

This model fosters high levels of independence. Children are empowered to initiate their own learning rather than relying on adult direction. As a result, we have seen notable improvements in both attainment and progress across Year 1.

EYFS Floor Books

Each reception class has a floor book which provides a wonderful record of the learning that has taken place each term. Children are encouraged to view it and discuss their learning. It is shared with parents during parent consultations.

Year 1 & 2 Knowledge Organisers

At Carrington Infant School year 1 & 2 classes create Knowledge Organisers at the start of each new curriculum topic. This may have a science, history or geography focus. The organisers are sent home so parents can support their child/ren with the learning that is happening in class. We share vocabulary and definitions as well as key learning intentions. To see the current knowledge organisers go to the 'classes' tab and select your child's year.
