Trauma informed and attachment aware
At Carrington Infant school, we are proud to be a Trauma Informed and Attachment Aware community. We understand that every child arrives with a unique story, shaped by their relationships and experiences. Our approach is rooted in compassion, connection, and understanding — ensuring that every child feels safe, valued, and ready to learn.
What Does Trauma Informed and Attachment Aware Mean?
Being trauma informed means we recognise the impact that adverse experiences can have on a child’s development, behaviour, and emotional wellbeing. Being attachment aware means we understand the importance of secure relationships in helping children thrive. Together, these approaches guide us in creating a nurturing environment where children can build trust, regulate their emotions, and develop positive relationships.
Our Behaviour Policy: Behaviour Regulation and Relationships
Our Behaviour Regulation and Relationships Policy is shaped by research in trauma and attachment. It moves away from traditional behaviour management and instead focuses on connection not correction:
- Understanding the ‘why’ behind behaviour — recognising that behaviour is a form of communication.
- Supporting emotional regulation — helping children name and manage their feelings.
- Building strong, trusting relationships — between children and adults, and among peers.
- Creating predictable, safe environments — where children feel secure and supported.
We do not use punitive measures. Instead, we use restorative approaches, co-regulation, and consistent adult support to guide children through challenges. Our staff are trained to respond with empathy and curiosity, not judgment.
Working Together with Families
We believe that strong partnerships with families are key to supporting children’s wellbeing. We welcome open communication and work closely with parents and carers to understand each child’s needs and strengths. Together, we can help every child feel confident, connected, and ready to succeed.
